Description
2026 Joint Family / Criminal Law CLE
Join us for a full day of practical insights covering key issues in family and criminal law, including the following:
The Family Law CLE on the morning of May 8th has something for everyone. While we wait in anticipation for news from the legislature, this year's session simply modified the Child Support Commission Report in small ways, and otherwise did not pass major family legislation. We will be presenting on the new changes brought about by the Commission's Report, which will take effect on July 1, 2026. We will also speak about the impact that immigration tactics and practices have on family law cases, and how to navigate both sides of cases involving non-citizens. In addition, we'll have a vital discussion about QDROs and division of retirement assets in their various forms, as well as the best way to expedite those transfers. Finally, there are plenty of new apps that help us as practitioners, and our clients, navigate the waters of family interactions, and everyone will find something that will benefit their practice in these tips!
The first half of the Criminal Law CLE titled “South Dakota Forensic Lab: Capabilities, Reliability and Case Impact” is an overview of the South Dakota Forensic Laboratory’s forensic science services. This session is designed to help attorneys better understand the strengths, constraints, and evidentiary value of forensic science as it applies to litigation and trial strategy. The second half of the CLE titled “Beyond Evidence: Understanding the Medical-Forensic Exam After Sexual Assault.” This session will include a practical overview of the post-assault medical-forensic examination. Emphasis is placed on the medical, legal, and trauma-informed considerations that impact case evaluation, testimony, and courtroom interpretation.
