March Law for Lunch - United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians Revisited: Justice, Repair, and Land Return
Tuesday, March 19, 2024 (12:30 PM - 1:30 PM) (CDT)
Description
In Sioux Nation of Indians, the Supreme Court held that the Sioux were entitled to an award of interest on the principal sum of $17.1 million (the fair market value of the Black Hills as of 1877), dating from 1877. In order to disperse the sum, the BIA must approve a distribution plan, which has not been done, and the amount is still accruing interest.
The goal of this presentation is to bring the members of the bar up to date on the future of land distribution regarding the Black Hills.
