Davenport Evans lawyer Terry Prendergast has been named a 2026 Howard Wood Relay Honorary Referee. ReNae Hays has also received the honor in 2026. Click here for a historical listing of Honorary Referees.

Terry Prendergast grew up in Volga, South Dakota, with his sister Sue and parents Harry and Dorothy Prendergast. Terry’s father Harry, a member of the South Dakota sports hall of fame, coached track and field, among other sports. From an early age, Terry was indoctrinated into high school sports. Following graduation from Sioux Valley High School, Terry received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana College, and an MBA and law degree from the University of South Dakota. He has been a practicing attorney in Sioux Falls since 1978 and currently practices at Davenport Evans Law Firm. While at Augustana, he served as a sports reporter for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader working under Hall of Fame member John Egan and covering the Howard Wood Relays and other track meets. He helped establish the Northern League, the first independent professional baseball league, in 1992 and was a co-owner of the Sioux Falls Canaries independent minor league baseball team from 1998-2009.

As a Howard Wood Board member since 1980, Terry served as President of the Howard Wood Relays board in 2002 and 2003 and is a 46-year volunteer counting it as one of his proudest affiliations. Serving as chair of various committees through the years, Terry has headed the Special Events Committee for over 40 years. The Special Events have grown from one event a year to a highlight of the meet with national top times, competitors from nine states and three countries, and great competition for local athletes. “The goal of this committee has been to have all eight runners selected get a personal best in the race.” Terry said. “That is success!” Terry is also active in the community. He is Past President and Board Member of both Lutheran Social Services and Lutheran Social Services Foundation, Past President of Siouxland Heritage Museums, Past President of the Sioux Falls Downtown Kiwanis Club, Past President and Board Member of Feeding South Dakota—Food Service Center, Inc., Past Chair of the Elks Youth Services Committee, and Past Vice President and Board Member of the South Dakota School for the Deaf Foundation, where he served for over 25 years. Terry serves his church as Chancellor and is also on the Investigations Committee of the Dakotas Conference of the United Methodist Church.

Terry and his wife of 46 years, Susan, have two sons, Chris and Steven. He also has two grandchildren, Paget and Penley, and would be happy to show you their pictures.
